Favorite Healthy Carob "Chocolate" Smoothie
Who doesn’t love a chocolate smoothie? Here is a caffeine-free version I love full of protein, fiber, and superfoods sure to start your day out right. Who needs that morning coffee now?
Ingredients
I have an assortment of the following ingredients on hand for a frosty, chocolate-tasting smoothie full of healthy ingredients.
Ice and Water - I usually add a handful of ice and enough water to make about 1 cup
Carob. Carob has a naturally sweet taste so unsweetened carob powder works best. Here are few of my favorites. A little goes a long way so usually a rounded teaspoon per serving is more than enough.
Leafy Greens. I like spinach more than kale but will sometimes add a small handful of each.
Ground Flax Seed. Besides being a good source of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, about 1 round tablespoon of ground flax seed helps thicken the shake. This organic one is already pre-ground and ready to use.
Protein Powder. My favorite is Naked Whey with no added sweeteners, natural or artificial. Vanilla Orgain is also good and vegan, gluten free, and no sugar added.
Dates. If you wish to omit the protein powder but still need some sweetness, try a handful of dates.
Wild Blueberries. Full of antioxidants, I try to use frozen organic wild blueberries whenever possible. When I don’t have them on hand, this powdered version is also very tasty and nutritious.
Acai Powder. Speaking of antioxidants, Acai is a powerhouse. I like this organic, freeze-dried version.
Collagen Peptides. Known for promoting healthier skin and joints, I sometimes add a scoop or two of collagen peptides. This one is unflavored. If you’d like to combine your collagen with a protein powder that already had other superfoods in it, Orgain has a great one here.
Depending on the day, I will sometimes add half of a frozen banana and 2 tablespoons of almond butter just to change up the taste a bit.
It’s All About the Blender
There’s nothing worse when making a smoothie when there are chunks of ice or other ingredients clogging your straw. After all, a smoothie is supposed to be smooth.
I invested in a Vitamix blender about 15 years ago and it is still going strong. You can also find refurbished (aka renewed) ones here. There are other brands (I tried this Ninja, and it’s pretty good), but I still find that my Vitamix does the best job of making a truly smooth, enjoyable drink in just a few seconds.
