Staying Energized Without Caffeine

As caffeine levels in your body ebb and flow, it can feel like a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs Sometimes it feels like you have endless energy while other times, you are struggling to stay awake. Caffeine causes an artificial “fight or flight” response that instantly puts your body on high alert. It may feel like energy but it is actually putting your body in a state of stress and possible anxiety.

When you are caffeine free, you wake up naturally energized and do not need a cup of Joe to get your thoughts together. You rely on good nutrition and exercise to keep your body’s natural systems on even keel throughout the day.

Here are ways to continue to keep your energy levels steady throughout the day.

Stay Hydrated

If you are getting enough sleep but are still feeling a bit tired during the day, chances are you are not getting enough fluids. Talk with your doctor about the amount of fluids you should consume a day based on your activity level, body size, and other factors. Most experts say an average of 8 glasses a day should be the target. This can include caffeine-free drinks as well so feel free to add some warm, comfort teas or refreshing iced teas to your daily intake.

Limit Your Added Sugar

Foods high in added sugar may give you an instant lift, but invariably may lead to an immediate drop in energy. Look for a good combination of carbs, fats, proteins, and fiber to keep your blood sugar level on an even keel while still providing you with longer term energy. Try baking something healthy but satisfying to snack on when the cravings hit.

Plan Your Eating Times

If you eat at regular intervals, you body will start to recognize when it needs more fuels. Skipping meals can make you feel sluggish.

Exercise

When you start to feel tired, try taking a quick walk. This can trick your brain into thinking you need more energy so you immediately start to feel better. Exercise triggers norepinephrine and endorphins which can make you feel less tired.

Try a Power Nap

Aim for an earlier time of day if possible to avoid disrupting your sleep cycle. 20 minutes is the magic number. It’s long enough to reset your brain but not long enough to contribute to grogginess.

Stress Less and Commune with Nature

There’s something about spending time outdoors that will leave you more energized and less stressed. Take a few deep breaths of fresh air and you’ll immediately get a lift.

In Summary

Many rely on caffeine to keep going all day, but there are other ways to keep fatigue at bay. Plan your day well with plenty of caffeine-free fluids, keep your added sugar levels down, eat on a regular schedule, get some outdoor time and throw in a walk, or even take a power-nap. Your body and mind will thank you for all your new healthy habits.
